Psyonix shared some surprising news regarding Rocket League Monday. The ability to play across platforms currently featured on the PlayStation 4 and PC is coming to the Xbox One as well.
Details on how cross-platform play will work for Rocket League between the Xbox One and PC have not been shared yet. Psyonix states more information on how games played between the two platforms will work will come later this Spring along with “information regarding other platforms.”
“To say that the team here at Psyonix is both honored and excited to have Rocket League as the first cross-network game is a massive understatement, Pysonix wrote. “Cross-network play has been the number-one most requested feature our community has asked for since Rocket League was first announced on Xbox One, and now that we are able to pursue complete online unity on all platforms, today’s announcement is a dream come true.”
Does this mean the developer is eyeing cross-play between the PS4, Xbox One, and PC simultaneously or is Rocket League simply expanding to additional platforms such as the Mac? It’s an interesting conundrum that I am eager to hear the solution. Cross-play between the Xbox One and PC is currently only being promoted by Microsoft via Windows 10 and the Universal Windows Platform (UWP) initiative.
Does this mean Rocket League coming as a Windows Store release in addition to a Steam release? There are definitely more questions than answers with Psyonix’ announcement.
Update: There is definitely more going on here. Microsoft also just announced it is extending cross-play support to include Xbox One, PC, and “other consoles.” Obviously, that means the PlayStation 4, but it will be interesting to see which developers take on the challenge of getting Xbox LIVE and the PlayStation Network to play nicely with one another.
