A NeoGAF user recently uncovered a patent that Nintendo filed for a very unique looking controller. It’s possible this could be an early design for one of the few controllers we may see for the Nintendo NX console.
As you can see from the picture above, the controller is shaped like the letter U and has a d-pad on the left and face buttons on the right. It is called the “Training Implement, Training System, and Input Device”.
The controller is hollow and has a sensor inside. Some people noticed that it looks similar to the Xbox 360 steering wheel controller that was released a few years ago. It’s hard to tell what type of game will be suitable for a controller like this, but a driving style title might be the most feasible one.
Patents don’t usually come into fruition all of the time, so it’s possible we may not see this controller for the Nintendo NX console. If it is available on the NX, it might be an extra peripheral as I doubt this will be the default controller.
Nintendo needs the NX console to be a success so a gimmicky style controller like this won’t appeal to the masses. You have to admit, Nintendo isn’t shy on always thinking outside the box. Thinking creatively can be good, but sometimes it can backfire.
