The PS4 continues its worldwide dominance as shipments for the console now stand at over 40 million units. The console did extremely well over the past year exceeding company projections.
All of Sony’s financial results were posted via a PDF file. Sony predicted to ship 17.5 million PS4 units in fiscal year 2015 but it managed to shift 17.7 million units instead. This is a jump from the 14.8 million units shifted in the prior year.
In other interesting news, PSN sales hit 529 billion yen in revenue. This number alone is higher than the 504 billion yen earnt by the entire division of Nintendo. Making PS Plus somewhat mandatory on PS4 was a good move from Sony from a business point of view.
One has to wonder how original PS4 console sales will be affected when the 4K version is expected to hit later this year. Sony is sure to try and persuade people to upgrade even though it’s not entirely necessary to do so.
Revenue earnings for Sony could be even bigger next year if PlayStation VR manages to break out. VR is still an untapped market and sadly the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive haven’t seemed to have attracted casual buyers thus far.
