Overwatch hit just over a week ago, and everyone kind of knew that the game would be a huge hit. Massive fan excitement, a fabled developer, and a gameplay formula that was just starting to really become a phenomenon combined to form the perfect wave of anticipation. Now we know just how big that anticipation was with Blizzard announcing that Overwatch sales have already topped seven million, making it “one of the most successful global game launches of all time”.

In a press release they state “the world needs heroes, and citizens from London to Xi’an to Rio de Janeiro are rising to the occasion to join the ranks of Overwatch®! Blizzard Entertainment’s critically acclaimed team shooter launched worldwide on PlayStation®4, Xbox One, and Windows PC on May 24, and since then more than 7 million players have fought for the future in Overwatch, logging more than 119 million hours combined in one of the most successful global game launches of all time—and the battle is just getting started.”

On top of the sales Blizzard gave us a few more stats that show just how big Overwatch has become. So far, across PC, PS4, and Xbox One, players have put in over 119 hours of Overwatch play. Players have swapped heroes over 326 million times, indicating that players are not only trying out different characters, but actually taking advantage of the system that allows mid-match swaps. And those players have delivered 11 million payloads to their destination, showing that these players are also playing a whole lot of Overwatch matches.

The story of Overwatch is just beginning though. This new IP seems poised for bigger things in the future, as Blizzard shapes it into the mega franchise that it will eventually become. Overwatch is available now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Be sure to check out all of our guides for tips and tricks to the game.
