We now know just how much longer we’ll have to wait for Injustice 2, the next entry in the DC Comics fighting game series. Mortal Kombat co-creator and NetherRealm Studios creative director Ed Boon made it official on Twitter: May 16th, 2017.

Injustice 2 is set to be a direct sequel to the first game in the series, Injustice: Gods Among Us, which told a unique out-of-continuity story featuring DC Comics characters like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Lex Luthor, and the Joker, set in an alternate reality where Superman becomes a tyrannical dictator in the wake of a tragedy.

The first Injustice game was wildly popular, with reviewers praising the fighting game’s story, mechanics, multiplayer and single-player options, and character variety. It was popular enough to spawn a best-selling comic series and a mobile game that has sustained momentum long after its inspiration’s release.

Gameplay trailers have shown off a familiar system, with combat seemingly very similar to the first game’s. One new addition is the “Gear System,” where you can upgrade and customize characters to some extent. Each time you play, the game will utilize “RPG-like mechanics” to drop loot that can then be used to upgrade a given character’s stats, meaning that eventually your version of Superman or Batman will look much differently than someone else’s, complete with different approaches to combat or strategy, depending on what upgrades you did or didn’t install.

The full roster for Injustice 2 has not yet been released, but we know to expect plenty of DLC to add to the number of characters fans will get to play around with, and if the results of a poll Boon held are anything to consider, a few surprises should be among the more predictable character options, such as Mortal Kombat character Sub-Zero. Scorpion was a DLC character in the first Injustice.

Are you looking forward to the next entry in the Injustice series? What characters would you like to see make the cut?
