The developer responsible for the action-RPG Lords of the Fallen, Deck 13, have revealed that their next action-RPG called The Surge will be launching in a few months. The game is set to launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC this May, and a CGI trailer for the game was released that you can check out at the bottom of this post.
The game definitely has a different style compared to what was offered in Lords of the Fallen, and the developer provides the following synopsis:
“Freshly recruited as an augmented worker at CREO, Warren’s first day coincides with a catastrophic event during the routine surgical operation meant to graft–through flesh and bone–employee exo-suits. This marks the first in a series of brutal events, turning this first day at CREO into a hellish nightmare of robots gone haywire, crazed employees with fried cranial implants, and artificial intelligence who all want Warren dead.”
Warren is more powerful with the use of his exoskeleton, being able to target specific points of enemies and using the spoils to upgrade his suit.
It will be interesting to see how Deck 13 will try to improve on the formula they used with Lords of the Fallen, as that was a game that many saw as underwhelming. We gave it 3 stars in our review of it, saying that it’s “a solid action RPG, but it isn’t without its flaws. The weighty combat, while enjoyable, is offset by disappointing difficulty and a lacking narrative. It is a commendable first attempt whose follow-up, if there is one planned, could stand as a worthy rival to the Souls series.”
Despite its shortcomings, the game is set to be getting a sequel that is slated to launch later this year. However, Deck 13 will not be returning to co-develop the game, and the team that has replaced them has not been revealed.
