Microsoft Tempers Expectations for Tokyo Game Show Showcase

Xbox announces its return to Tokyo Game Show 2021 and subtly tempers fans’ expectations and making it clear there will not be any new global debuts.

Tokyo Game Show is known to be one of the world’s biggest celebrations of the video games industry on a global scale, and Asia’s biggest gaming event. This year, the event will take place online only as was the case with E3 and Gamescom due to the pandemic.

Xbox has confirmed its own virtual stream in the Tokyo Game Show that is specifically designed for Japanese and Asian players across the continent. Xbox however has wisely made it crystal clear for all its fans that the stream will not have any new game announcements.

“As games close the distance between people, we invite our players to celebrate the joy and community of gaming with us. Similar to last year, this will be a show curated for our players in Japan and across Asia,” Xbox says, “Expect a celebration with our Asia community and locally relevant updates, though no new global debuts should be expected. Tune in to see the latest regionally relevant updates on previously announced games coming later this year.”

Xbox instead promises some game updates that are relevant to Japanese and Asian audiences, only for titles coming later this year with no clear list of games that fans should expect to make an appearance.

Xbox returning to the Tokyo Game Show should come as no surprise to the Asian audience, as Xbox has been making an effort to appeal to Japanese audiences. This was proved most fruitful when Xbox Series X/S has sold more during their first 33 weeks on the market than the Xbox One.

Tokyo Game Show will take place from September 30 to October 3, and the Xbox stream will take place on September 30 at 6 pm JST.
