An animated Venom film is officially in development at Sony. Directing the project are Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, the duo behind the recently released Final Destination Bloodlines, which brought the long-running horror franchise back to life.
Tom Hardy, who has played Eddie Brock in three live-action Venom films, is also creatively involved in this animated project. According to Variety, it is not yet clear whether he will voice the character or take on a different behind-the-scenes role. The film is still in its very early stages of development, so many details remain unconfirmed.
The three live-action Venom films were not critical darlings, but they were enormous box office hits, collectively earning over $1.8 billion worldwide. That level of commercial success speaks to how popular the character is with audiences globally.
Sony Pictures Animation’s strong Marvel record gives this project real promise
What makes this announcement particularly noteworthy is Sony Pictures Animation’s track record with Marvel’s Spider-Man universe. The studio produced both Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, two films that were widely praised for their animation style and storytelling.
A third film, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is expected in 2027. Fans of the symbiote universe may also want to explore how to unlock Venom-themed weapon blueprints in Warzone if they want more of the character in their gaming life.
Lipovsky and Stein gained significant attention after Final Destination Bloodlines earned $317.9 million at the box office, proving they can deliver a commercially successful film. The two directors are also set to co-write Gremlins 3 alongside Chris Columbus, with Steven Spielberg serving as executive producer. That film is also slated for a 2027 release.
Given Venom‘s dark and often violent character, combined with the directors’ background in horror and their work on Gremlins 3, the animated film is unlikely to be aimed at younger audiences. Spider-Man fans curious about the symbiote’s history in games might also want to know whether you can get the black suit tendrils back after completing Spider-Man 2.
Animation as a format could give the filmmakers more creative freedom to explore the character in ways that live-action films could not. But Sony has not yet confirmed a release date or cast for the animated Venom film. With the project still in early development, further details about the story, voice cast, and release timeline are expected to emerge in the coming months.
