Gears 5 follows in the footsteps of the many online-focused shooters that came before it in inundating the player with tons of currencies and other things to collect. Whether it’s Supply Drops, Iron, or Jack’s various upgrade items, there’s tons of things for players to manage and collect. One of the most important of these is Scrap, a currency that players can use to buy specific cosmetic items they wish to have. But the way you get Scrap is a bit unique, so here’s a quick rundown of how to get Scrap in Gears 5.
How to Get Scrap
The answer, unfortunately, is that it’s kind of out of your control. As I said, Scrap is a bit unique in Gears 5 in that it’s a currency that you only get under very specific circumstances. As we explained here, when you complete an online match or accomplish various tasks in the game, you’ll earn Supply Drops. Within these are random or semi-random cosmetic items you can use to customize your characters and their weapons. Each drop will give you something, but sometimes it isn’t something new. And since there’s no point in having two or more of a gun or character skin, this is where Scrap comes in.
Any time you open a Supply Drop and receive an item you already have that item will automatically be converted to Scrap instead. This won’t happen often in your first few hours in Gears 5, so don’t get worried if your Scrap wallet is empty all week. Once you have a nice collection of cosmetics and Supply Drop items you should start to receive duplicates more regularly, and in turn receive Scrap instead.
Gears 5 shook up its microtransaction and loot box mechanics this time around and Scrap is one of the ways The Coalition hopes players feel they are having a more fair experience. Hopefully this helped explain how to get Scrap in Gears 5, but if you have any questions be sure to let us know.
