Gears 5: How to Open Locked Doors with Jack or Dave

The Gears of War series has always relied on friendly robot helpers to get you through the campaign, but Gears 5 takes it to another level. Starting with Dave before getting an upgradeable Jack, players will use this trusty floating friend for a ton of things. Most of all they’ll open doors for you though. In the intro levels there’s actually a lot of these, so here’s a quick guide on how to open locked doors with Jack or Dave in Gears 5.

How to Open Locked Doors

While many of the doors you run into can be opened with a simple press of the X button, others require Jack or Dave to intervene. These typically are separating larger sections of the level, acting as resting spots between battles, or hiding some powerup or ability you’ll need later. These doors strangely don’t have much indication for how to open them, until you know what to look for.

If you aim with left trigger you should see a Jack symbol appear on the door, or a switch nearby. This is the key to opening pretty much every locked door in Gears 5. Whenever you come across a locked door just start looking around with your weapon raised. You can press Y to have Jack fire off a scan, if that is the ability you have equipped. Something should start to glow, and aiming at it will show the symbol. Then just press X to direct Jack or Dave to the target, and he’ll handle the rest. Be sure to look everywhere though, some switches are behind glass, around corners, or through passageways that only Jack or Dave can fit through.

Opening locked doors is a pretty standard game design element, but Gears 5 takes it and makes it its own by integrating your cool robot friend. Jack plays a big role in this adventure, so be sure to check out our other guides for tips on how to upgrade him and what else he can do.
