Pokemon as a series has had many staples over the years, with some seeing evolution throughout the different generations. One of the commonalities is that of the Pokedex, which allows you to keep track of all the Pokemon that you see and capture in the game. Like pretty much every Pokemon game, you don’t start off with your Pokedex right at the start, but rather have to complete a few tasks first to acquire it. This guide will detail how you can get the Pokedex in Pokemon Sword and Shield.

How To Get The Pokedex

Every mainline Pokemon game starts off by providing you with a starting Pokemon and Pokemon Sword and Shield is no different. After getting your starting Pokemon from Leon, you will eventually have to go after a Wooloo that ran off into the forest. You will start to have wild Pokemon encounters at this point, but still do not have a Pokedex in hand. Do not worry, however, as you will get one fairly soon.

After saving Wooloo, you will return to town and must speak with your mom and then head out of town. At this point, you will be directed to head to the Research Lab to get your Pokedex. After taking the roundabout way thanks to some Wooloo in the way, you will end up in the town here and must go to the right to find a building with a Poke Ball above the door.

Once you walk near the building, Leon will appear and take you inside to meet Sonia. She will speak with you and notice that you have a Rotom Phone. At this point, she activates the Pokedex on your Rotom Phone, now giving you access to it anytime from the pause menu. In fact, you will already have all the Pokemon you’ve come across to this point in the Pokedex as well, except for the mysterious one you came across in the woods.
