The Wii U is closing in on two years on the market, but the struggling console’s best days may still be ahead of it. At least, that’s what Nintendo believes as evidenced by the recent boost in sales for the console following the successful launch of Mario Kart 8.
Nintendo has revealed that the first weekend for Mario Kart 8 saw 1.2 million copies of the long running franchise sold to Wii U owners. That figure makes Mario Kart 8 the fastest selling Wii U game in the console’s short life.
In a press release, Nintendo claims that the Wii U’s best days are ahead of it still. “The early response to Mario Kart 8 demonstrates that the best days for Wii U are still ahead,” according to Reggie Fils-Aime. “This year’s E3 is just days away, and it will be all about the future games for Nintendo platforms. This milestone is a great place to start,” said the Nintendo COO.
Mario Kart 8 could give the Wii U a nice launching pad heading into the holiday season. With back-up coming from Super Smash Bros later this year, Fils-Aime’s predictions just may be true.
