With a few months under their belts, Microsoft’s Xbox One is tapping into the power of the cloud. A recent update on the Xbox Wire details the benefits of the Xbox Live cloud, and how this translates into better gaming experiences on the Xbox One.
It’s no substitute for raw power, and Microsoft isn’t claiming it does, but according to the company, the Xbox One benefits from better online connectivty, improved multiplayer experiences, and evolving gameplay experiences.
The power of the cloud can make more stuff happen in games
The company cites Forza Motorsport 5 and Titanfall as two games who taking advantage of their server infrastructure, using dedicated regional datacenter connections for online multiplayer, giving players lower ping times and smoother play experiences.
Microsoft also says that the cloud dampens things like “Host Advantage” and other types of unfair edges or cheating in multiplayer games.
Though the most interesting and potentially most promising as we look forward are the evolving gameplay experiences, which Microsoft says allow for developers to rely on the power of the cloud “to make more stuff happen” in a game. Again, citing Forza 5 and Titanfall, which both utilize the cloud to power AI and NPCs.
So who’s the next big developer to take advantage of this cloud technology? We haven’t heard of any so far, but Respawn’s praise of the dedicated servers could push other third party developers to utlize Microsoft’s resources in upcoming games.
