Video game movies have never been all that well received or successful, and it’s looking like Warcraft will continue that trend on the critical front at least. Assassin’s Creed is looking good so far from Ubisoft and they already have their eyes on their next project it appears with a movie based on the recent Tom Clancy’s The Division.
The Division launched back in March to record breaking sales and solid reviews, though story was far from one of its best qualities. This would seemingly make it a bizarre choice to bring to the big screen, but the basis of the game definitely has a lot of potential for a big screen adaptation, which Variety is reporting is in the works.
Similar to Michael Fassbender’s involvement with Assassin’s Creed, Variety reports that Jake Gyllenhaal is attached to the movie to not only star, but also serve as a producer. They also report that they are in the process of finding a writer to pen the adaptation.
What makes this even more interesting is that Gyllenhaal previously starred in the Prince of Persia movie that was done by Disney, which is a Ubisoft property as well. Ubisoft is now handling their movies hands on though, so they are the ones calling the shots.
This movie could end up in development hell like many video game based movies, but if Assassin’s Creed is a big success for the company later this year, you’d have to think there is no question that they move forward on this one.
