FLCL Returning With Two New Seasons Produced By Adult Swim

FLCL (aka Fooly Cooly) was a staple of the Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim Toonami block back in the day. The six-episode anime series had a huge impact when it was released. Huge enough for Adult Swim to revive it with a slate of two new seasons.

Adult Swim made the announcement on its Facebook page with the below animated GIF where it revealed Production I.G. will co-produce season 2 and 3. Production I.G. was part of the FLCL Production Committee, which included Gainax and Starchild Records.

“That’s right, we are producing 12 new FLCL episodes to be split into two seasons, and serve as a sequel to the original classic, FLCL!” the Atlanta-based animation cable channel announced.

For the unfamiliar, FLCL is a comedy/action show mixed with a coming-of-age drama featuring a twelve-year old boy named Naota and a guitar-wielding, Vespa-riding space agent who goes by Haruko Haruhara.

Haruko drags Naota through a series of adventures to stop Medical Mechanica and its robots in her search for the Pirate King, Atomsk. Along the way they deal with various over-the-top characters and a kicking soundtrack from The Pillows.

The ending of FLCL was wrapped up the short series somewhat neatly, so it will be interesting to see what direction Adult Swim and Production I.G. take the show. Another question is if The Pillows will return to make the soundtrack. The band is still active, but no announcement has been made yet.
