Grand Theft Auto Online is no doubt going to be one of Rockstar’s most ambitious projects to date. But a new rumor suggests that Rockstar might be taking that ambition to a new level, doubling the player count from 16 to 32.
The online component to Grand Theft Auto 5 is seeing these rumors this morning due to a information dump discovered by Cinema Blend that makes the bold claim. Found tucked away in the Xbox 360’s network configuration settings, it’s said to have a Free Mode that will allow up to 32 players. Free Mode, as well as some other popular modes from Grand Theft Auto IV were discovered in the files. These included Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Races, and other familiar modes.
Rockstar has yet to comment on the validity of this claim, but not many games have tackled such a large number of players on current-gen hardware, so we’ll chalk this up to being a rumor at this point.
GTA Online is said to be arriving in early-October as a free add-on to Grand Theft Auto 5.
Update: Â As of this morning, Rockstar has responded to the claims. Â “Not sure where that rumor came from but GTA Online will support 16 players,” the company said via Twitter.
