A car buyer in Washington almost made a huge mistake after finding out a 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS he wanted to buy had been messed with. The seller had supposedly rolled back the odometer by tens of thousands of miles and didn’t tell him about the car’s accident history.
TikTok user @travv.ha, who makes videos about buying and selling cars, posted about what happened in a video that now has over 450,600 views. The Camaro SS was being sold online for $20,350 with just 60,000 miles showing on the odometer. When he first saw it, it looked like a really good deal because these cars usually cost a lot more.
But when @travv.ha checked the Carfax report for the car, he found out the odometer had been rolled back from 114,000 miles. The report also showed the car had been in three accidents. In his video, he told other people looking to buy cars in the area, saying, “If you’re in Washington, don’t buy this Camaro from these guys. It’s rolled back 60K miles. Run the Carfax when you buy a car, guys.”
A Simple Check Saved Him Thousands Of Dollars
What happened shows why it’s so important to run a vehicle history report before buying a used car. Carfax reports give you lots of information about a car’s past, like who owned it before, if it was in any accidents, if there are problems with the title, and what kind of repairs were done. One of the best things about these reports is they can catch odometer fraud by keeping track of mileage from different places.
According to Carfax, more than two million cars on the road right now have rolled back odometers as of December. That’s a 4% increase from the year before and an 18.6% jump since 2021. The reports can also show if a car has a salvage title, flood damage, or safety recalls that you might not notice just by looking at the car or taking it for a test drive.
For people buying cars, having this information helps when talking about the price. Just like someone getting an amazing gift they always wanted, finding the right car takes time and careful checking. If you know about past accidents or repair problems, you can figure out if the car is really worth what the seller is asking or if you should pay less.
The video got a lot of attention from other TikTok users who told their own stories in the comments. One person said, “This happened to me, bought a ’07 Honda Pilot with ’60K miles,’ didn’t know anything about car faxing it until a month later, and found out it had 150k with a salvaged title.”
Someone else from the same area warned people about another car, saying, “Yesterday, I went to see a Nissan 350z that had 21,000 miles manipulated that was reported in 2021, imagine now possibly has about 30,000 miles manipulated. Be careful, this Nissan 350Z is in Kent, W.A.”
A lot of people in the comments talked about how important it is to do your homework when buying used cars. Everyone seemed to agree on one thing: always run a vehicle history report and think about getting someone to inspect the car before you buy it. Like someone who used whatever they could grab to stay safe, car buyers need to use every tool they have to avoid getting scammed.
