Last month it a rumor started to spread that Sony was working on a new console that would output 4K resolution for games, which the internet instantly dubbed the PS4.5.  Now, it appears that Microsoft may be working on their own upgrade to the Xbox One, which has been spotted on a developer’s Linked In profile.

As spotted by Crave, David Gardner, the Visual Design Lead at Xbox has something quite interesting in his profile.  Alongside his work on the Xbox One, Xbox Smartglass, and Xbox 360 — Gardner’s profile lists something called “Xbox neXt.”

What is the Xbox NeXt?

It’s not too surprising that Microsoft is working on a follow-up console to the Xbox One considering how popular both Sony and Microsoft’s new-gen offerings have been with consumers.  However, these rumors of new consoles so early in life-cycle for the PS4 and Xbox One is quite a shocker when you consider how long the last generation lasted.

So what is the Xbox NeXt?  It’s hard to tell.  It could certainly be a console that allows for the company to keep pace with Sony, if they do in fact have a new, more powerful PlayStation 4 in the works.  Gardner hasn’t removed the listing at the time of this post, so we can only speculate as to the what and when of it all.

Rumors of a more powerful Xbox have been swirling for some time.  A recent Microsoft showcase saw Phil Spencer indicating that the company is looking into different options to deliver games at higher fidelity to Xbox fans.
