It looks like Blizzard has plans on adding microtransactions to World of Warcraft. Players of the popular MMO recently found notes referring to an in-game store on the game’s public test servers. After the discovery, Blizzard did make a post on the World of Warcraft forums with regards to the new feature.
“We are currently exploring the possibility of adding a way for players in certain regions to make purchases directly within the game. As part of this process, elements related to this will be appearing on the PTR. We’ll provide additional updates on our plans as development progresses.”
World of Warcraft has seen dwindling numbers in recent years, but it still has millions of paying subscribers. Perhaps Blizzard is looking to offset the loss of paying subscribers with an expanded offering of digital goods in the virtual world.
World of Warcraft is currently free to play via Battle.net with the World of Warcraft Starter Edition.
