Night Trap Remake Brings Live Action Video Gaming to PS4 and Xbox One

Night Trap, one of the games that were responsible for the creation of the ESRB, is getting a brand new 25th anniversary remake for PS4 and Xbox One. Originally launched for the Sega CD back in 1992, the game hearkens back to a very different time in the gaming industry, featuring live action video as the main source of gameplay and story telling.

The game works in a similar fashion to more modern horror games like Five Nights at Freddy’s. Players can’t really move, and can only partially interact with the environment, which results in different events happening within the storyline. That storyline is a very classic horror trope of a bunch of young people in a house with some murderous intruders.

The description for the new Night Trap 25th Anniversary Edition trailer reads “Night Trap tells the story of five teenage girls spending the weekend at the Martin home. As a member of the Special Control Attack Team, your job is to monitor the home and protect the girls using an intricate system of cameras and traps as it is being invaded by vampires.”

The cheesy and campy nature of the original game seems to have been maintained in the move to PS4 and Xbox One. As I haven’t played the original, despite owning a really sweet Sega CD, it isn’t clear to me whether these live action video scenes have been remade, or simply reused from the original release. We have very few details about the game so far.

There was a Kickstarter campaign that was aimed at remastering the game, but it failed to achieve it’s crowdfunding goal. The creator was adamant that a re-release would be created though, and it seems like he’s succeeded.

Night Trap – 25th Anniversary Edition is set for release on PS4 and Xbox One this Spring.
