With its year long head start, the Xbox 360 has been leading the PlayStation 3 for the entire generation. However, according to a new research report, Sony has finally taken the lead in the number of consoles shipped worldwide.
Games Industry got their hands on a Worldwide Video Game Entertainment Console Hardware and Packaged Software 2012-2016 Forecast from the International Data Corporation, which is said to include numbers from December that show Sony has passed Microsoft in worldwide sales last month (approximately 77 million to 76 million).
The report does make it clear that these numbers are shipped totals, and not sold through to the consumers. It wouldn’t be a huge stretch to see Sony finally catching Microsoft, over the years, numerous analysts predicted that Sony would eventually catch Microsoft. It appears that day has finally come.
The pricey video game sales forecast also weighs in Nintendo’s future, claiming that the company will continue to find an audience with the Wii U and projects the company to ship 50 million consoles by 2016.
