Pokemon GO, the free-to-play mobile game from Nintendo, has been a little mysterious ever since its fantastic unveiling last year. Fans understand the basic premise of the game, where you travel around the real world in search of Pokemon, but other than that the details of how this all works have been under lock and key (aside from the occasional leak, of course). Now there is a huge new dump of details, including some key pieces of info, like how to get more Poke Balls, and how Pokemon will actually evolve.
“Get on your feet and step outside to find and catch wild Pokémon,” reads the info page. “Explore cities and towns around where you live and even around the globe to capture as many Pokémon as you can. As you move around, your smartphone will vibrate to let you know you’re near a Pokémon. Once you’ve encountered a Pokémon, take aim on your smartphone’s touch screen and throw a Poké Ball to catch it. Be careful when you try to catch it, or it might run away! Also look for PokéStops located at interesting places, such as public art installations, historical markers, and monuments, where you can collect more Poké Balls and other items.”
So, while there is still the high likelihood of some microtransactions where you buy essential items like Poke Balls, it seems like there will be free options available, and they’ll direct you toward some cool local attractions.
On top of this, the post details the Pokemon Trainer customization that you can do, making your character look how you want them to look. You’ll also be able to expand your Pokedex throughout your time in the game, unlocking new and more powerful items, such as the Great Ball. And if you were wondering how you’ll evolve your Pokemon in Pokemon GO, it seems like you just need to catch a few of the same monster, which will let you choose one to evolve.
There will also be three teams in the game, which you’ll be asked to choose between at a certain point in your progression. “Once you join a team, you’ll gain the ability to assign Pokémon you’ve caught to empty Gym locations or to a location where a team member has placed one of his or her Pokémon. Like PokéStops, Gyms can be found at real locations in the world. Each player can place only one Pokémon at a particular Gym, so you’re encouraged to work with others on the team to build up a strong defense.”
If you want to take over a Gym from another team you’ll have to fight for it, using the Pokemon that you have caught in your travels. “Battles are challenging and fun. Use your Pokémon’s two attacks to battle the defending Pokémon. You can also dodge the defending Pokémon’s attacks by swiping left and right. If your Pokémon wins the battle, then the Gym’s Prestige is reduced. When the Gym’s Prestige is reduced to zero, the defending team loses control of the Gym, and you or another player can then take control of it by assigning a Pokémon to it.”
Nintendo also confirmed that the US will receive the Pokemon GO Plus device, which you can wear on your wrist and use as a notification of nearby Pokemon.
