The PS4 has been absolutely dominant since not long after its release, with those sales continuing to stay strong month after month. With little in the way of big system sellers this month, there is no surprise that the PS4 has once again come out on top of the monthly NPDs.
While now details were given specifically on how well PS4 sold, it came in first place for the month. The PS4 train just keeps on rolling, but the big test will be the next few months where Microsoft has multiple first-party exclusives, while PS4 really doesn’t have much outside of a few remasters.
Microsoft certainly didn’t have a bad month with its Xbox One either, even coming in second place. In fact, their Xbox One console sales were up 44% from where they were last year, which is quite impressive.
Sony also took the top spot in overall software sales, though not a single game in the top 10 was exclusive to any one console. Only one newcomer from July even made the top 10, which was Rory McIlroy PGA Tour at #5 overall and released on both Xbox One and PS4.
Surprisingly, LEGO: Jurassic World took the top spot this month, after already being out for three weeks prior in June as well. The combination of being available on pretty much every possible modern platform outside of PC really helped this stay strong, especially with the popularity of Jurassic World.
Technically, Batman: Arkham Knight, which came in 2nd, would have been #1 if the NPDs included bundles, but instead only solo copies of the game counted, while tons of people bought the Batman: Arkham Knight PS4 bundle in July also.
Do you think that PS4 will keep it up in August or could Xbox One snatch a monthly victory away with Gears of War: Ultimate Edition out near the end of the month, though that is a remake.
