Sony as a company might be losing money, but this is not the fault of the gaming department. The PS4 managed to sell over 3.3 million units in the quarter ended September 30, 2014.

This information comes from the recent financial report from Sony. Overall, 4.1 million home consoles were sold by the company in the recent quarter while portable consoles sold 0.7 million units. An impressive 106 million software units were sold too.

Thanks to the success of the PS4, sales from the gaming department increased by 83.2% compared to the same quarter in 2013. Sony had sales of 169 billion yen in 2013. This skyrocketed to 309.5 billion yen for Q2 2014.

The last time Sony announced overall PS4 sales was back in August. Back then, 10 million PS4 units were sold. This new update should have increased sales to approximately 13 million units. The console came out in November 2013 so this figure was achieved in roughly only 10 months.

Nintendo has sold just over 7 million Wii U consoles now while the Xbox One has sold around 5 million units the last time Microsoft announced an update on sales. All consoles are sure to get an extra boost for this upcoming quarter thanks to the Holiday season.

As successful as the PS4 has been, Sony still had an operating loss of $785 million and a net loss of $1.247 billion. This was mainly due to the other departments that Sony owns.
