Recently, we reported on the rumor of an upcoming Sonic game that was on the heels of the recent Sonic Boom title, Sonic Runners. SEGA has announced that Sonic Runners is in fact the next Sonic title, but is going to be released for smartphones.
The lead producer, Takashi Iizuka, made the announcement during a Sonic fan event at Tokyo Joypolis. Not much information was given about the title other than its release on smartphones. However, judging from the name, it could likely be a mobile game in the same vein as Sonic Dash, which is played like an endless runner game.
It would be interesting to see if the game somehow ties into the ongoing television show or the previously released Sonic Boom. In previous instances with Sonic mobile games such as Sonic Dash, they tied the universes together with small additions via updates that released additional elements like bosses or levels from other Sonic titles.
More information regarding Sonic Runners is set to be announced in January. The title itself is set to hit smartphones in Japan sometime in 2015 and will eventually arrive in the west at a later date.
