Sony Reportedly Prevented Cross-Platform Character Transfers For Destiny 2

Dating back to the original Destiny, Sony has had a partnership with the series that included exclusive DLC for PlayStation platforms. This has been a point of contention for fans of the series, but now it sounds like Sony made another move when it came to Destiny 2 that really will leave a lot of people disappointed.

Destiny 2 started players all over from what they already had in the first game and Bungie didn’t have any plans evidently to have character’s carried over between games. However, Bungie was looking at the potential of letting players carry progression across the various platforms for Destiny 2, but Sony prevented this from happening.

Kotaku’s Jason Schreier spoke about this subject in the latest episode of the Splitscreen podcast, with a transcription of what he said made available courtesy of a poster on ResetEra.

“I heard that Bungie wanted to do character transfers for PS4, PC – before Forsaken came out – but Sony wouldn’t allow it. Sony is just like, we want people to associate Destiny with PS4, even if that means screwing over other players. It sucks and hopefully Bungie ends it.”

PS4 has definitely been the main platform people think of when it comes to Destiny, but with the sequel making its way to PC as well on top of Xbox One, that level of exclusivity can do more harm than good.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the inevitable Destiny 3 now that Bungie is fully in charge of publishing, as they broke away from publisher Activision awhile back. Hopefully they won’t lock themselves down with exclusive content to where one platform has the pull to prevent a feature like this if Bungie wants to do it.
