According to Michael Pachter, Microsoft back in the game in the war between the Xbox One and PS4. The analyst believes that the Xbox One is coming back from the brink of a near disaster for the brand, and that with six months to go, “Microsoft can fully level the playing field”. But Futhermore, he believes that Microsoft could pull a Nintendo and slash the price of the new system as early as 2014 if sales aren’t meeting their expectations.

We are confident that Microsoft can fully level the playing field

“We are confident that with six months of focused messaging, Microsoft can fully level the playing field with Sony, and we expect the Xbox One to sell as many units as the PS4. If we are wrong, we think that Microsoft is prepared to lower price next year.”

Pachter’s investor notes also suggest that GameStop’s used game business won’t be going away any time soon. While he predicts another 10 year life-cycle for the new systems, he also doesn’t think we’ll see higher than a 50% market share for digital distribution on both platforms. Pachter does note that this does not include DLC or “indie” games.
