President Donald Trump has directed the Department of Justice to look into Democratic officials he says are using threats of impeachment against Republicans, according to The Daily Mail. He described the activity as a serious form of pressure and named Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin in the statement. The message appeared on Truth Social on Saturday.
In the post, Trump wrote that Democrats are going around threatening a lot of people, including the Attorney General of the United States, and others, with Impeachment and many other forms of punishment. He added that they admit they have no reason to do so, and there have been no impeachable acts committed, or even thought of, by the victims of this illegal process. He stated that this amounts to extortion at the highest level.
Trump wrote, “This is extortion at the highest level, and they should be held accountable for this.” The statement followed midterm elections in which Democrats took control of both the House and the Senate. He also said the imprisonment should be against these EXTORTIONISTS, and Republicans should get smart, fast.
Accusations in the post regarding Slotkin and claims of letters to Republicans
Trump singled out the Michigan senator in the message. He wrote, “The Senator from Michigan, Elissa Slotkin, is saying that she is going to go after all young people that believe in Republican Values, and that give even the slightest inclination to be a Republican.” He further accused Democrats of threatening donors with imprisonment and many other levels of punishment just because they happen to be Republicans or Republican supporters.
He described the overall situation as Weaponization and Lawfare at another level. Democrats have previously accused Trump of weaponizing the DOJ. Trump said he is ordering the Department of Justice to look into this criminal act immediately. He claimed that threatening letters have been sent to some Republicans.
Details about the content of those letters or the specific recipients remain unclear. The Daily Mail has reached out to the White House, the DOJ, and Slotkin for comment.
The post came shortly after Trump let go of Chief of Staff Susie Wiles on Friday and replaced her with Stephen Miller. In a 60 Minutes interview earlier that day, journalist Ross Douthat asked whether he expected to let anyone go after the party’s losses in the midterms. Trump replied, “I do.”
He continued, “I love my cabinet, I think they’re good. But I’ll be doing maybe a few changes. I don’t want to mention who.” Democrats secured majorities in both chambers and flipped Texas by electing Gina Hinojosa as governor and James Talarico to the Senate.
Sources told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins that the rest of the cabinet is in a “knives out” environment filled with tension and infighting. Collins said aides have described a workplace that has become highly factionalized in recent days. Trump reportedly blames Wiles for the midterm results, though he told reporters on Friday that the decision was not because of the election.
