A veteran who just retired after 20 years got pulled over by Border Patrol for going 68 in a 65, then the agent said he’d served 14 years too

Border Patrol agents are usually associated with checkpoints and immigration enforcement, not routine speeding stops. A recently retired veteran in California says he was pulled over by a Border Patrol agent for going just 3 mph over the limit, as the agent told him he was doing 68 in a 65 zone. His TikTok about the stop has drawn hundreds of thousands of views, according to The Nerd Stash.

The driver, Ray, posts on TikTok as @ray_2k5, and the video is tagged in San Diego. On-screen text says he was pulled over by Border Patrol after serving 20 years in the military. He captioned the clip “Discrimination at its finest,” and he says in the video that he had only just retired.

During the exchange, Ray tells the agent it is “a shame” that he served 20 years and is still being pulled over. The agent answers that Ray was going 68 in a 65, and that it is “still speeding.” He also asks how he is supposed to know someone is a veteran just by looking at them while pulling up alongside the car.

The Border Patrol agent reportedly told Ray he served 14 years himself

According to the outlet, the agent said he is also a veteran and served for 14 years. Ray did not receive a ticket, and the agent indicated he would be free to go as long as nothing else, such as a warrant, came up. However, Ray still believes the stop was not justified, and his caption makes clear he sees it as discrimination.

Viewers mostly focused on how small the speed difference was. One commenter called a stop for 3 mph over a 65 limit “crazy,” while another pointed out that plenty of drivers on the same roads go 85 or faster. A third viewer wrote that a stop for less than five over is not even enforceable, though no legal basis was offered for that claim.

Several commenters questioned whether Border Patrol agents can make speeding stops at all. One asked when Border Patrol started making traffic stops for speeding, and another wondered why the agent mentioned a ticket at all. Questions about who has the authority to pull drivers over have surfaced before, as seen when a driver pulled over by a uniformed man argued the man had no power to stop him.

Some viewers saw the agent differently. One commenter said the agent “seemed chill” throughout the exchange, and another joked that Ray should have asked whether 14 years of service led to this assignment. Others thanked Ray for his service and said they were sorry it happened. One viewer added that a highway patrol officer once let them go with a warning at 90 mph after spotting their disabled veteran plate.

Ray has since posted follow-up videos replying to commenters about the stop, including one tagged with the hashtag for racial profiling. Border Patrol has not commented publicly on the encounter, and the agent has not been identified. However, Ray has also not said whether he plans to file a complaint about the stop.

The clip could keep fueling questions about how often Border Patrol agents make speeding stops away from checkpoints, especially as Ray’s follow-up videos keep drawing replies from viewers.

Attack of the Fanboy was unable to independently verify Border Patrol’s side of the story, as this account originates solely from Ray’s TikTok video.
