A woman boarded a JetBlue flight to New York, then a 5,000-pound problem forced everyone off the plane

Passengers on a recent JetBlue flight were asked to leave the aircraft after the pilot announced the plane was 5,000 pounds over its safe takeoff weight, BroBible reports. TikTok user @ajahxixi shared a video of the incident, which has already reached thousands of views.

The captain explained the situation over the intercom while keeping a calm tone. “With the temperature and such and the amount of fuel that we’re having to carry back up to New York, we’re showing that we’re about 5,000 pounds overweight,” the captain said.

He noted that the cabin conditions were becoming uncomfortable because the temperature was rising. “We do know it’s very difficult in the airplane right now. The APU is doing everything it can to cool it,” the pilot stated. “We do appreciate your patience and cooperation.”

Airplanes have strict weight limits

It might seem strange that a plane could suddenly become too heavy, but this is often related to weather conditions. Airplanes have strict weight limits that factor in the total weight of the plane, passengers, luggage, cargo, and fuel. Hot air is less dense than cold air, which makes it harder for engines to produce thrust and for wings to generate lift. A flight that is safe to take off on a cool day might struggle when the temperature climbs.

While 5,000 pounds sounds like a massive amount of extra weight, it is a relatively small fraction of a plane’s total capacity. A Boeing 737 MAX 10 has a maximum takeoff weight of 203,000 pounds, as Pilot Institute mentions. Massive planes like the Airbus A380 can weigh up to 1.2 million pounds. Removing 5,000 pounds could mean offloading 100 checked bags, removing a small group of passengers, or adjusting the fuel load.

Many people who watched the video shared their support for the crew in the comments. Most viewers agreed that they would rather deal with the inconvenience of waiting than fly on a plane that is not within its safety limits. One person wrote, “Yep let me off. Yall figure it out and call me when it’s safe to be airborne!” Another user added, “I’m in ZERO rush to be anywhere, even if I am!”
