Dogs are considered man’s best friend, and most of them really live up to this claim. But at the end of the day, they are animals, and animals can sometimes be unpredictable. Following the news of a dog that claimed the life of a teenaged girl, we have another case in Portland where a pet had never shown any signs of aggression over several years of ownership, but ended up taking an innocent life.
As reported by People, a 7-month-old baby is no more with us after a family dog attacked her. Per WSMV, the dog is identified as an English Mastiff who attacked the infant and her mother early morning on 20 April. According to the press release from the Portland Police Department, the authorities were called at 7 AM. They came to know that the English Mastiff reached the victims from the back door and attacked the poor infant.
The press release further said, “succumbed to injuries sustained in the attack.” She was just 7-months-old, and, unfortunately, the injuries were bad enough to claim her precious life. Her mother also suffered from injuries, but she is expected to recover soon.
The authorities had to end the dog for the sake of the safety of others
The 7-month-old victim lost her life, and when the police arrived at the scene, they had to put the life of this dog to an end. Per WSMV, the animal was still present, exhibiting “aggressive behavior.” As a result, the cops had to euthanize the English Mastiff as his behavior could also put the lives of others in danger.
We have heard about a dog uncovering the truth behind a murder mystery, but this one ended up causing a tragedy. One of the family members, as per WSMV, said that they kept the dog for “several years,” and it had never shown any signs of aggression that makes him a potential threat to the family. However, it ended up doing the opposite.
The loss of the baby was indeed shocking for everyone. The police have also expressed condolences in a statement, saying, “The Portland Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the family during this extraordinarily difficult time,” and ended it with. “We also recognize the emotional impact such incidents have on first responders and appreciate their professionalism in handling this tragic situation.”
The case is still under investigation, but this tragedy is a reminder that animals, even if they seem friendly, can be unpredictable sometimes. Their sudden behavior changes, whether negative or positive, should be noted to understand them better before the situation escalates into irreversible consequences for both the pet and the human.
