Erika Kirk said ‘I just want to go home’ while being rushed out of the WHCD shooting, and the reason it hit so differently has the internet divided

Video captured by CNN anchor Sara Sidner on the night of April 25, 2026, showed Erika Kirk in tears as she was ushered out of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C. As highlighted by TMZ, Kirk appeared to say “I just want to go home” as she was led away from the venue, visibly shaken. Another video showed her outside the Washington Hilton, standing near FBI Director Kash Patel and others while being consoled.

The shooting occurred at around 8:34 PM EDT near the main security checkpoint outside the main ballroom. The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California, allegedly fired shots near the screening area. Law enforcement swiftly apprehended him, and no attendees were injured. One Secret Service agent was struck in a bullet-resistant vest and is expected to recover.

President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and several cabinet members were evacuated by the Secret Service. Trump departed the Washington Hilton for the White House at approximately 9:45 PM EDT after law enforcement requested all attendees leave the venue. He later called for the dinner to be rescheduled within 30 days.

The footage hit differently because of what Erika Kirk has already been through

Kirk is the CEO of Turning Point USA and the widow of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed at Utah Valley University in September 2025. The April 25 incident came just seven months after that assassination, and the footage of her being escorted away in tears drew an immediate and divided reaction online. Many pointed to the proximity of the two events as the reason the clip resonated the way it did.

The night’s security had been described by former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe as close to a national security event in scale, given the concentration of senior officials present. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche told CNN that Allen appeared to be targeting members of the Trump administration. Writings attributed to Allen referenced administration officials and described him as the “Friendly Federal Assassin,” according to investigators. Amid scrutiny over administration officials’ conduct, Kash Patel has faced separate questions about his own behavior as FBI director.

Allen faces two federal charges: using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon. He was placed into an ambulance following his arrest and taken to a hospital for evaluation. He was scheduled to appear in federal court on April 27, 2026, for his arraignment.

The week before the dinner, Erika Kirk had withdrawn from a Turning Point USA appearance with Vice President Vance in Athens, Georgia, citing what she described as very serious threats made against her. The dinner went ahead despite those concerns, though it was ultimately canceled following the shooting. Marco Rubio, who attended the event as Secretary of State, has separately been at the center of controversy over green card revocations linked to an unverified social media post.

Allen was charged with using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon, and his federal arraignment was set for April 27, 2026.
