It’s not a huge surprise that Call of Duty: Black Ops II was the number one game on Xbox Live in 2012. Treyarch’s follow-up to the 2010 release of the original Black Ops has had tons of fan-fare since its announcement. The introduction of the Pick 10 System and changes to the scorestreak systems have changed the multiplayer game immensely, and apparently those changes have resonated with the fans.
However, Call of Duty has been topping the Xbox Live activity lists for years. Game players on the Xbox can’t get enough of Activision’s shooter franchise. More surprising was the prominence of Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition in the yearly round-up.
Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition not only cracked into the top five in activity for the year, but was also the most downloaded title on the service. Not too shabby for a game that not many assumed would ever catch-on with the console crowd.
But, the actual list is pretty telling about what people are interested in on the Xbox 360, and that’s shooters. Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and Call of Duty: Black Ops held three of the top five spots for the year of 2012. Throw in one spot for Halo 4, and the other going to Minecraft, and you’ve got a top five that shows that most Xbox 360 players really love their shooters.
Call of Duty is showing no signs of slowing down on the Xbox 360 either. Activision is getting ready to launch the first expansion pack for Black Ops II, called Revolution, which helps keeps the game in the disc drive all year-round and Xbox 360 players will get it exclusively for a month.
