We already know that the critics hated the recent Assassin’s Creed movie, but what does the casual audience think of it? Well things are not looking great so far judging by its Box Office performance.
As reported by BoxOffice.com, the numbers for the Assassin’s Creed movie are not pretty at the moment. During the three day Christmas weekend, the movie earned only $10.3 million.
Even though it opened on a Wednesday, these numbers are still not very high for a big budget movie. The movie is estimated to earn $22.5 million in total ending on Monday. Globally, the movie has earned $36.7 million in total thus far.
Sure the movie has yet to open in countries like the UK, Italy, New Zealand and more, but those territories are unlikely to add more dollars to the total.
The budget for the film is $125 million so these types of numbers are disappointing. It will be hard for 20th Century Fox to break even on the movie if word of mouth is not great. On Rotten Tomatoes, only 19% of critics like it, which is usually a bad sign. However, 67% of the audience like it, although casual movie goers are likely to just avoid the movie altogether.
The fact that the Assassin’s Creed movie is rated poorly by critics and the fact it’s not earning well at the Box Office is another blow to video game film adaptations. People had hoped video game movies would explode like comic book films, but a reception like this is unlikely to set the world on fire.
To add more insult to injury, 20th Century Fox decided to release the movie so close to Star Wars: Rogue One. Rogue One is still earning a lot of money worldwide so many people will probably decide to go watch that instead.
