While Blizzard has said in the past that they will not be supporting cross-platform play between PC and consoles for Overwatch, that doesn’t mean that there will be no cross-platform play at all. In fact, they have now revealed on Twitter that it’s something that they will continue to look into going forward.
The official Overwatch Twitter account was recently asked by a fan whether or not cross-platform play would become a reality, to which the account replied with “There is no cross platform play. We’ll keep an eye on cross-platform possibilities on the consoles.” The same fan goes on to ask whether or not PS4/PC cross-platform play would happen, and they replied with “We have no plans for that. Mixing mouse/keyboard and controller can have balance and competitive issues.”
Cross-platform play has been a feature that has been requested more and more lately, with Rocket League being the big game to breakthrough with the feature. While cross-platform play between PS4 and PC with a game like that may be fine, in an FPS where it is much more easier to pull off head shots on PC than it is on consoles it’s understandable that they would be hesitant to go in that direction.
Overwatch is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. It was recently revealed that the game topped 7 million copies sold globally, making it one of the most successful global game launches of all time.
