Hearthstone Hits 30 Million Players

Blizzard has announced that their collectible card game Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft has hit a player count of 30 million as of today. This massive success is largely due to the game’s free-to-play pricing structure, the vast number of platforms it can be found on, and the sheer addictive quality of its gameplay. Players create decks of cards made up of various characters from the Warcraft universe. They then do battle with other players, attacking and defending using the cards pulled from their deck. Like other CCGs, Hearthstone has a lot of collectibility to its structure, letting players purchase packs of cards, hoping to get that rare one that will complete their deck.

Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft was first announced at PAX East 2013, and was released the following year on March 11th, 2014 for PC. Since then it has rolled out to Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Android platforms. There were 20 million registered users of Hearthstone in September of 2014, the game then went on to hit 25 million in January 2015. That means 5 million players have joined Hearthstone in just the last four months.

This has probably been spurred with recent releases of new content, with Goblins vs. Gnomes and Blackrock Mountain adding new cards for players to buy and collect. Just how high the player count can go is anyone’s guess at this point.
