Alan Wake was one of the best games that was exclusive to the Xbox 360, which has made it all the more surprising that we have still not received a proper sequel. Developer Remedy returned to the scene earlier this year with the Xbox One exclusive Quantum Break, and while they have some new games in development none are an Alan Wake sequel.
While some have speculated that it may have been due to financial issues and the long development cycle of the original game that has caused the hold up, Xbox’s Phil Spencer has now added a bit more to the conversation. He recently did an interview with Stevivor where he was asked about the potential of an Alan Wake 2. He said “How do I put this? Well, the developer… the developer has to want to make the game.”
The response was unfortunately cut short as the interview came to an end, but Spencer seems to be implying that the developer simply isn’t interested in making the sequel at this point. While they had initially been working on a follow-up after the game launched in 2010, the early drafts lead them down a completely different path that resulted in Quantum Break.
The release of Quantum Break also resulted in Alan Wake being made backwards compatible for Xbox One earlier this year.
