PlayStation 4 top seller in July once again

NPD Numbers are in for July ’14 and Sony continues to dominate the charts with the PlayStation 4. Consumers are still spending cash on new consoles, with console sales up almost twenty percent year over year.

Recent tallies would suggest that Sony could have nearly a 2-1 sales lead

We learned at Gamescom that Sony had passed the 10 million sold mark for the PS4, but it’s unclear where Microsoft’s Xbox One stands at this point. In North America, the PlayStation brand was dominant in July. The PS4 was #1 for the seventh consecutive month and is the cumulative leader for new consoles in North America, presumably by a lot. Recent tallies would suggest that Sony could have nearly a 2-1 lead over Microsoft at this point. Though actual sold through figures haven’t been announced by Microsoft.

Sony was also dominant when it comes to software sales “by a considerable margin”.

Microsoft on the other hand hasn’t been as forthcoming with their numbers. They claim that the Xbox One “continues to sell at a strong steady pace,” according to a statement from the company. Despite an effective price cut in June, which brought the console down to $399 for a Kinect-less version, the move has failed to push them past the PlayStation 4.

Nintendo is apparently doing ok with the Wii U as well. The company says that sales of the console are up significantly year over year, pushed higher by high profile releases like Mario Kart 8. A portion of their official statement can be found below.

“Mario Kart 8 continues to drive momentum for the Wii U platform. Through the first seven months of 2014, total sales of Wii U hardware and software have increased by nearly 60 percent and more than 135 percent respectively, over the same period in 2013.”

Despite console sales growing, software sales were on the decline in July. This was largely in part due a lack of releases. Sony’s The Last of Us was the top seller in July. The rest of the top ten games can be found below.
