President Donald Trump held a press conference at the Oval Office on Wednesday and called for three more people to be prosecuted. He named Jack Smith, Andrew Weissmann, and Lisa Monaco as people he wants investigated. Trump made these demands while standing next to Attorney General Pam Bondi, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, and FBI Director Kash Patel.
As per MSNBC, the meeting was supposed to be about something called Operation Summer Heat, but no one really explained what that was. Instead, Trump spent the time complaining about his enemies and pushing for criminal charges against them. There was no effort to hide that the White House and the Justice Department are working together.
Trump said all three people were criminals who broke the law. He said, “What they did was criminal. Deranged Jack Smith, in my opinion is a criminal.” He added, “I hope they’re going to look into Weissman, too. Weissman is a bad guy.” At the end of the event, Trump said his approach has been too soft so far. He claimed he and his team have been “very, very soft” when going after his political enemies and hinted he might get more involved soon.
This Isn’t The First Time Trump Has Done This
Jack Smith was the special counsel who charged Trump with crimes during the Biden administration. He brought two separate criminal cases against Trump. Andrew Weissmann used to work at the FBI and was one of the main lawyers looking into whether Trump’s campaign worked with Russia in 2016. Lisa Monaco was the number two person at the Justice Department when Joe Biden was president.
Trump also said he wants Democratic Senator Adam Schiff from California investigated. He said “I hope they’re looking at Shifty Schiff. I hope they’re looking at all these people.” Trump also wants a federal investigation into his loss in Georgia five years ago. The event raised big questions about whether federal law enforcement can be independent under Trump, especially with growing worries about Trump’s payback actions against federal workers.
This is not new behavior from Trump. About a month ago, he wrote a post on social media telling Bondi to go after three people he called “guilty as hell” even though he did not say what crimes they committed. That post basically admitted he was trying to force law enforcement to target his political enemies.
Wednesday’s press conference showed Trump doing the same thing again, but this time he did it face to face with the top law enforcement leaders in the country standing right next to him. He made his demands out in the open without caring about the normal rules that keep the White House separate from criminal investigations.
