Senate took another shot at Trump’s global tariffs, and we have these two key senators to thank for their attendance

Not all Republicans are on board.

The Senate has said no to President Donald Trump’s tariffs once again. This time, lawmakers voted to stop his worldwide tariff plan. Four Republican senators broke ranks with their party and joined Democrats to block the policy.

Trump put a 10% tariff on goods from countries around the world earlier this year. According to Fox News, He said the country was facing an emergency because of big trade deficits. He used special emergency powers to make this happen. But many senators have not been happy about it and have tried to stop these tariffs all year long.

Senator Ron Wyden from Oregon tried to pass this same bill before. The first time around, it failed by just one vote at 49-49. But here’s the thing: it wasn’t really about Democrats versus Republicans. Two senators who wanted to vote yes just weren’t there that day. Mitch McConnell and Sheldon Whitehouse both planned to support it but missed the vote.

The comeback that made the difference

Things changed when the vote came up again in October. This time, McConnell made sure he was there. He voted yes along with three other Republicans. Lisa Murkowski from Alaska, Susan Collins from Maine, and Rand Paul from Kentucky also voted to stop the tariffs. These same four senators had already voted against Trump’s tariffs on Brazil and Canada in earlier votes.

The Senate also passed two other bills to stop Trump’s tariffs. One would end the 50% tariffs on stuff from Brazil. The other would end the 35% tariffs on Canadian products. All three bills made it through the Senate because these Republicans voted with Democrats. The tariff fights have touched many countries, with Mexico recently navigating its own tariff challenges.

But these bills probably won’t go anywhere. The House of Representatives already voted to keep Trump’s tariff plans in place until next year. So even though the Senate passed these bills, they likely won’t become actual laws.

On a different note, Trump just lowered some of his tariffs on China. He dropped them by 10% after meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. This brings the total tariffs on China down from 57% to 47%. China agreed to help stop chemicals used to make fentanyl from getting into America.

They also agreed to make it easier for American companies to get rare earth minerals. “I had a truly great meeting with President Xi of China. There is enormous respect between our two Countries, and that will only be enhanced with what just took place. We agreed on many things, with others, even of high importance, being very close to resolved,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

The White House has also made promises about using tariff revenue for nutrition programs, though people are still waiting to see when that money will actually arrive.
