A Florida man’s attempt to troll the police with his doormat worked for 24 hours, then the sheriff’s office showed up and delivered the ultimate clapback

Another Florida man.

A Florida man who tried to troll the Volusia Sheriff’s Office with a custom doormat learned a painful lesson about getting exactly what you wish for when fraud detectives showed up with a warrant and arrested him, as per BroBible. Christopher Musick, 57, of Daytona Beach, was being sought in connection with a large-scale mortgage fraud scheme, but it was his choice of home decor that truly sealed his viral fate.

When officers first arrived at Musick’s residence, they spotted a rather cheeky welcome mat that read, “come back with a warrant.” You know what? The Volusia Sheriff’s Office was more than happy to comply with that specific request. They even took a photo of the doormat and shared the whole story on Facebook, noting the obvious: “We came back with a warrant.”

In my opinion, this is the ultimate law enforcement clapback. It’s one thing to be arrested, but it’s another thing entirely to have your attempt at cleverness used against you by the agency that ultimately put you in custody. I love it when the police have a sense of humor about these absurd situations.

Detectives say he was running a sophisticated, large-scale operation

The Florida man allegedly created fake documents so he could pretend he was the legitimate owner of multiple business properties in Volusia County. Once he established this fraudulent ownership, he would take out mortgages against those properties. The scheme was cyclical and incredibly profitable for him, since he used the borrowed money to buy even more properties. He would then rent them out, pocketing the rental income, all while never paying off the original loans.

The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that after they interviewed Musick, they established enough probable cause to execute a search warrant at his residence. This means that, after all the proper legal steps were followed, they were able to satisfy his doormat’s specific request. Musick is now officially in custody, and you can bet that doormat isn’t getting much use while he’s gone.

Just like the repeat bank robber we reported about earlier, this guy isn’t new to the system either, which makes his attempt at trolling even worse for him. The VSO noted that Musick has a lengthy rap sheet that includes 10 prior felony convictions. On top of the current fraud charges, he also has two outstanding warrants out of Maryland. That’s a lot of baggage for one person to carry, especially when trying to play games with law enforcement.

He’s currently facing serious charges, including organized scheme to defraud, forgery, and grand theft over $100,000. His bond is currently set at a staggering $225,000. That extremely high bond alone tells you how serious law enforcement is about the scale and impact of this mortgage fraud case.

We’ve seen this happen before, where criminal suspects try to be too clever for their own good, like in the case of the Brazilian ‘Catwoman’, forgetting that law enforcement usually gets the last word. It reminds me of those past criminal cases where people marked bags of drugs with notes saying, “definitely not a bag full of drugs.” Trying to be funny just doesn’t work when you are facing serious allegations.
