House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chair James Comer is signaling that Bill Gates might soon face a subpoena if he refuses to cooperate with the ongoing investigation into his alleged ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as reported by The Hill. The Kentucky Republican stated that it is a “pretty good bet” his panel will seek additional information from the billionaire co-founder of Microsoft.
Comer explained that the committee’s process starts with an invitation to testify. “If he refuses to come in, I think a subpoena is highly likely,” the Chairman added. Comer noted that the decision to pursue Gates comes after his committee interviewed Melinda French Gates and after members of Congress from both parties requested the action.
Representative Nancy Mace publicly called on Comer to subpoena Gates over the controversial emails this week, clearly ramping up the political pressure. Comer confirmed this is how things move forward. “That’s how the subpoena process starts. You don’t just issue a subpoena on Day 1, you invite someone to come in,” he said. “I think it’s probably a decent bet.”
With the pressure mounting from Congress and the public, it seems Bill Gates is quickly running out of room to maneuver
You can see why Congress is interested. This subpoena threat follows the release of the latest batch of documents known as the “Epstein Files,” which included some truly wild claims tied to Gates. Specifically, the documents contained two draft emails Epstein sent himself on July 18, 2013, which appear to have been intended for Gates. These drafts contain seriously disturbing and unverified allegations concerning extramarital affairs.
In one draft, Epstein claimed Gates asked him to delete emails related to a sexually transmitted disease. Epstein also alleged that Gates requested antibiotics he could “surreptitiously” give to his then-wife, Melinda French Gates. Even more shocking, another draft email claimed Epstein helped the billionaire “get drugs” to “deal with consequences of sex with russian girls.”
Gates’s team isn’t taking these allegations lightly. A spokesperson for the billionaire immediately called the claims “absolutely absurd and completely false.” They stressed that the documents only serve to show how frustrated Epstein was that he couldn’t maintain an ongoing relationship with Gates. They argue Epstein went to extreme lengths to “entrap and defame” the philanthropist.
Gates himself addressed the matter in an interview, expressing deep regret over ever having known Epstein. “Every minute I spent with him, I regret, and I apologize that I did that,” he stated plainly. Gates maintains he only met with Epstein to seek investors for his global health initiatives. He also strongly denied ever visiting Epstein’s infamous island or meeting “any women” through him.
Regarding the specific emails, Gates dismissed them entirely. “Apparently, Jeffrey wrote an email to himself,” he explained. “That email was never sent. The email is false. I don’t know what his thinking was there.”
