Gen Z thrifter uncovers a shocking designer gem, and you won’t believe what it cost her

Nothing like a good thrift haul.

Get ready for some serious thrifting envy because 28-year-old Sarah from Florida just hit the jackpot, uncovering an authentic Christian Dior slip dress for a mind-blowing 50 cents! This incredible find, a white Christian Dior slip dress trimmed with lace, stunned internet users after she shared it in a TikTok clip on March 3.

According to Newsweek, Sarah, who goes by @sarahinonederland online, told us that the designer dress “appears to be authentic.” Similar dresses can easily fetch anywhere between $50 and $500 on platforms like eBay, so her 50-cent purchase is a truly unbelievable deal.

She actually discovered this gem at a Goodwill bins location, also known as a Goodwill Outlet, where unsold items from regular stores are sold in bulk. Thrift shops like these typically price things by weight, not individual item value, which is how she snagged such a high-end piece for next to nothing.

You never know what you’ll find when you go thrifting

For those of us who love a good thrift hunt, the “bins” are legendary for their unpredictability, but they’re definitely known for occasionally hiding some high-end surprises. Sarah’s video even had text layered over it saying, “I wonder what I’ll find at the Isabel Marant store today…,” referencing the French fashion designer. Marant’s brand is super popular with Gen Z right now, especially as they rediscover those cool 2010s “indie sleaze” and boho-chic styles.

Sarah, who visits charity shops around five times a week, has turned her passion into a career. She runs her own business selling vintage clothing and is constantly on the lookout for standout products from thrift stores just like this Dior dress. Her viral moment comes at a time when more and more Americans are diving into second-hand shopping, often due to financial concerns.

People are definitely tightening their belts when it comes to discretionary spending. Newsweek states that a recent survey of 2,000 adults, conducted by Talker Research and commissioned by Mercari, found that this type of spending has dropped by a whopping 42% over the past year. With 52% of respondents worried about their finances, thrifting has become a regular habit.

The survey revealed that 66% of Americans now shop second-hand regularly, and a significant 17% do it weekly. Gen Z is really leading this trend, with 28% thrifting every single week, and 22% even buying second-hand items online.Beyond individual success stories like Sarah’s, thrifting has actually become a massive global industry.

Buying used clothing and footwear is not only cheaper, but it also helps cut down on waste and gives shoppers access to unique or vintage items as fashion trends come back around. The global second-hand apparel market was valued at an incredible $227 billion in 2024, and it’s projected to hit nearly $370 billion by 2027. The United States, which has the world’s largest clothing market, is also a top exporter of used clothing.

Sarah’s amazing discovery definitely resonated with fellow thrifters, with her TikTok clip racking up over 242,000 likes. The comments section was flooded with users sharing their own fantastic finds. One person wrote, “I found Hermes, Thom Browne, Edie Parker, and Brunello Cucinelli at the Isabel Marant store before,” which is just wild.

Another user chimed in, saying, “Everything is in [those] bins rich people donate stuff all the time,” highlighting the potential treasures hidden away. We even saw one comment that said, “I found a Marc Jacobs dress for a dollar.”
