Clemson Tigers baseball saw a massive lead evaporate, and their NCAA season hopes took a serious hit. It all came down to an umpire interference call that completely flipped the script against instate rival Coastal Carolina Chanticleers baseball. The Tigers were cruising, but one unlucky moment opened the door for the Chanticleers to snatch an 11-9 victory.
The non-conference matchup at Doug Kingsmore Stadium started with Coastal Carolina landing the first punch, putting up three runs in their opening at-bat. However, Clemson quickly responded, absolutely dominating the next six innings. The home team racked up nine runs, building a commanding 9-3 lead as they headed into the top of the seventh. It really felt like the Tigers were in control, ready to secure a much-needed win against a strong opponent.
Everything changed in that fateful seventh inning. According to BroBible, Coastal managed to cut the deficit to 9-5, but Clemson still looked poised to escape further damage. With the bases loaded and two outs, the Tigers forced what should have been an inning-ending pop-up into shallow right field.
Up six runs, and somehow it still slipped away
This is where things went sideways in a big way. As first baseman Jack Crighton tracked the flyball, he got tangled with an official, causing a crucial distraction. That interference resulted in a two-run single for Coastal Carolina, suddenly making the score 9-7. The Chants weren’t done yet, adding another run to make it 9-8 before the inning closed. The home crowd was absolutely furious, letting the umpire know their displeasure with a flood of boos. You just hate to see a play like that decide such a critical moment.
Those three runs in the seventh proved to be the turning point, giving Coastal Carolina all the momentum they needed. They capitalized on the shift, adding three more runs over the next two innings to complete the comeback, ultimately winning 11-9. It was a brutal collapse for Clemson, especially after holding such a comfortable lead.
After the tough loss, Clemson head coach Erik Bakich focused on his team’s performance rather than the umpire. “We didn’t lose because of the umpire interference. We lost because we got out-competed in the seventh, eighth, and ninth. That’s ultimately on me,” he stated. Bakich emphasized the need to maintain pressure, noting, “I should’ve found a way to make sure we kept the pedal down. They outscored us 8-0 in the late innings, and that’s not acceptable.”
The coach also highlighted fundamental defensive issues, admitting, “We’re not playing fundamental defense right now.” These breakdowns have become a recurring theme in college baseball, from Clemson’s missed assignments to the violent first-base collision involving a Michigan pitcher. Clemson committed three errors, including one that gave Coastal Carolina the lead in the eighth. Out of 11 runs, only nine were earned, underscoring the severity of these defensive lapses.
Out of Coastal Carolina’s 11 runs, only nine were actually earned, which really underscores the impact of those defensive lapses.
