Sony is still paying for the 2011 hack of the PlayStation Network, that sent the online community into a month’s long bout of downtime. The hack which also resulted in the loss of personal data of PlayStation Network members was preventable, according to a recent ruling by UK legislators who placed a hefty fine on the company.
“if you are responsible for so many payment card details and log-in details then keeping that personal data secure has to be your priority,” said David Smith of the Information Commissioner’s Office. “In this case that just didn’t happen, and when the database was targeted the security measures in place were simply not good enough.”
“It’s (Sony) a company that trades on its technical expertise, and there’s no doubt in my mind that they had access to both the technical knowledge and the resources to keep this information safe.”
The deputy commissioner did say that he thinks Sony learned a valuable lesson for their online networks going forward, and that because of the hack, there’s a greater awareness about the protection of customer data.
