Insurance companies received video of a bear attacking a Rolls-Royce, then a shocking discovery behind the footage led to a jail sentence

Three suspects have officially pleaded no contest to felony insurance fraud following a bizarre scheme involving a bear costume and high-end luxury vehicles. Alfiya Zuckerman, Ruben Tamrazian, and Vahe Muradkhanyan received their sentences on April 16, which include 180 days in jail and a requirement to pay restitution for the damages caused. These individuals will serve their time through a weekend jail program as part of their sentencing.

The entire operation, which the California Department of Insurance dubbed Operation Bear Claw, began to unravel on January 28, 2024. An insurance company became suspicious of a claim involving a 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost that allegedly suffered interior damage after a bear climbed inside the vehicle in Lake Arrowhead.

According to True Crime News, when the company reviewed the video evidence provided by the claimants, they decided it didn’t quite look like a wild animal. They escalated the matter to detectives, who quickly determined the footage actually depicted a person wearing a bear costume.

Not them pulling up with the same fake bear every time

It gets even weirder when you look at the scope of the fraud. Investigators eventually linked the suspects to two additional insurance claims for a 2015 Mercedes G63 AMG and a 2022 Mercedes E350. These claims were filed for the same date and location as the initial incident. In each case, the group allegedly used the same costume to stage the attacks and provided video footage to support their claims.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife even brought in a biologist to review the footage, and they confirmed that the bear was definitely just a person in a suit. You might wonder how they thought they could get away with this, but the level of detail they put into the costume is honestly wild. When detectives executed a search warrant at the suspects’ home, they found the bear costume, which included a specific claw attachment designed to inflict damage on the car interiors.

It is a pretty brazen attempt to trick insurance adjusters, and it ended up costing the insurance companies a total of $141,839.Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara weighed in on the situation after the sentencing, stating, “What may have looked unbelievable turned out to be exactly that and now those responsible are being held accountable.”

This costume-based fraud highlights a dangerous trend in scams, mirroring a multi-million dollar scheme where guides allegedly poisoned climbers to trigger expensive rescues. From staging animal attacks to endangering lives, the lengths people go to for fraudulent gains are becoming extreme. While three of the suspects have already been sentenced, the legal process isn’t over for everyone involved in this case.

A fourth suspect, 39-year-old Ararat Chirkinian, is still waiting for his day in court with a preliminary hearing currently scheduled for September. It is a massive reminder that insurance companies have increasingly sophisticated ways of verifying claims, and trying to pull a fast one with a costume is a surefire way to end up in legal trouble.

It is honestly surprising that anyone thought this would be a successful long-term strategy, but it is clear that the authorities were quick to see through the fur and claws.
