Secret Service rushed JD Vance out of the Correspondents’ Dinner before Trump, and the footage has people asking serious questions

Who's the priority?

Secret Service agents evacuated Vice President JD Vance from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner before President Donald Trump on Saturday, causing widespread confusion and scrutiny online. The incident took place in Washington, D.C., after gunshots were fired near the venue, forcing attendees to take cover under their tables. The event was canceled shortly after.

The situation started when a 31-year-old man from California, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, shot and injured a law enforcement officer near the hotel screening area. Officials confirmed that Allen was carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives. He is currently in custody and facing assault and firearms charges.

While the immediate threat was dealt with, the order in which people were evacuated has raised serious questions about the Secret Service’s protocols. According to Indy100, footage taken by Getty Images photojournalist Andrew Harnik shows Vance being rushed out of the ballroom while Trump remained seated at his table for several moments. This sequence has become a major talking point on X.

The evacuation order has raised serious questions that the Secret Service needs to answer

Political commentator Rita Panahi described the scene as “weird,” pointing out that “JD Vance is physically dragged from the table and President Trump is still sitting there.” YouTuber Keith Edwards also drew attention to the timing, and journalist Josina Anderson said she “would like to hear the explanation for this sequence of evacuation.”

This is not the first time Secret Service agents have faced scrutiny over their performance in high-profile situations. President Trump later spoke about the incident at a White House press conference. He called the shooter “a lone wolf” and “a thug.” When asked about how the Secret Service handled the evacuation, Trump said he was satisfied with their response.

Trump stated, “They acted very quickly. I was very impressed by Secret Service.” He also added, “I’m the one who would complain. You don’t have to complain for me. I would be complaining – I’d be up here right now saying ‘they didn’t do their job’, believe me.”

The Metropolitan Police Department confirmed the details about the weapons found on the suspect. The dinner is expected to be rescheduled at a later date. For a closer look at how the shooting unfolded at the Correspondents’ Dinner, including the haunting detail about where it happened, the full account has more information. The focus for now remains on the investigation into Allen and the recovery of the injured officer.

The questions surrounding the evacuation order are not going away. It is rare to see such a clear difference in evacuation timing for two high-ranking officials during a public emergency, which is why the footage has spread so widely. The Secret Service has not yet provided a clear explanation for why the Vice President was moved before the President.
