Florida father arrested after his 7-month-old’s brain injury, but a child witness just unmasked the disturbing reason behind the abuse

Anthony Hester, a 31-year-old father, is currently behind bars after facing charges for aggravated child abuse. The charges follow a disturbing investigation into the severe injuries sustained by his 7-month-old son, who required emergency surgery due to a brain bleed.

According to True Crime News, the situation first drew official attention on February 20 when hospital staff contacted authorities. The infant had been admitted to the hospital with a brain bleed, which was particularly concerning because the baby had previously been seen for vomiting and released.

After the second admission, medical professionals performed emergency surgery. A medical review later confirmed that the child’s injuries were consistent with abuse and happened while Hester was the only caretaker present. Detectives began interviewing family members and friends to piece together what occurred. A key piece of evidence came from another child living in the home.

That child using a stuffed animal to show the abuse is so sad

During an interview, the child used a stuffed animal to demonstrate the actions Hester allegedly took toward the infant. The affidavit details the child’s demonstration, noting, “(One child) took the stuffed animal and placed it above her head with her arms outstretched, shaking the stuffed animal vigorously, causing the animal’s head to shake back and forth. Additionally, (she) demonstrated bringing the stuffed animal to her eye level, screaming at the animal ‘why are you crying’ while shaking it the same as documented above.”

This child also told investigators that Hester would tell the baby, “Boys don’t cry” whenever the infant was crying. These disturbing allegations follow another recent case where a Florida fire lieutenant and his wife were charged for allegedly locking their daughter in her room for years. Another child in the home corroborated the accounts of the shaking. Furthermore, this witness stated that Hester would frequently leave for hours at a time while he was responsible for the baby’s care.

Hester’s wife confirmed that he was in charge of the infant while she was away at work. Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood emphasized the nature of these injuries during a statement, noting, “Babies that are 3 months old, or 6 months old, or 2 years old, they just don’t fall down and break their ribs. They don’t fall, break their arm. They don’t bang their head and get brain bleeds.”

Beyond the specific incidents involving the infant, other family members provided information regarding Hester’s personal history. Reports indicate that he was a heavy alcohol user and had a documented history of domestic abuse, which included instances of strangulation. It is frustrating to see such a pattern of behavior ignored until it reached this point of severity.

Hester was officially charged with aggravated child abuse on April 23. He remains in custody without bond as he awaits his next legal step. He is scheduled to appear in court for his arraignment on May 21. It is a relief that he is in custody, but the circumstances surrounding this case are difficult to process.

The investigation continues as the legal process moves forward toward the May court date.
