Charlton Craig Liner has officially pleaded guilty to the murder of his ex-wife, Karen Liner, bringing an end to a case that shocked the community in January 2025. By entering this plea on Monday, the 61-year-old managed to avoid a scheduled murder trial. He admitted to charges including first-degree murder, felony murder, and aggravated burglary.
According to People, a judge sentenced him to life in prison, and while he technically has the possibility of parole, he won’t be eligible for release for at least 51 years. The details surrounding the incident are truly harrowing. Karen, who worked as a nurse-turned-realtor and was a mother of two, was shot to death right in her own driveway.
During a preliminary hearing held earlier this year, Cleveland Police Detective Don Nation provided testimony regarding surveillance footage captured by a neighbor. The video allegedly shows Craig pulling into the driveway during the day before firing multiple shots. In a particularly brutal turn, the detective noted that after Craig initially walked away and entered a white sedan, he allegedly exited the vehicle once more to fire at least one additional shot.
Hearing about the ‘boat for a hitman’ plot is absolutely wild
Audio evidence from the scene is equally devastating. According to an arrest affidavit, a woman believed to be Karen was heard on a 911 call pleading for her life. She can be heard saying, “Please stop, Craig, please stop,” and “Get out of my driveway,” just before the sound of gunfire rang out. Investigators later alleged that Craig arrived at a friend’s home shortly after the shooting with three guns in his possession, making statements that indicated he had killed his ex-wife.
District Attorney General Stephen Hatchett addressed the outcome in a recent statement. “This was a horrific crime and it is my sincere hope this brings a small measure of peace and closure to Karen Liner’s family, friends, and loved ones,” he said. Cleveland Police Chief Mark Gibson also spoke on the matter, telling local reporters that he was “honestly just relieved that he didn’t plea and didn’t take the family through a trial.” He added that Karen’s mother was “pleased with the outcome.”
Even with this conviction, the legal trouble for Craig is far from over. He is currently facing separate, pending charges related to an alleged murder-for-hire plot that reportedly took place while he was held without bond awaiting trial. Affidavits suggest that while behind bars, Craig allegedly discussed wanting to have his ex-mother-in-law killed. He reportedly offered a fellow inmate his boat and car as payment for carrying out the hit.
To investigate these claims, authorities equipped the inmate with covert recording devices. While the investigation was complicated by the fact that the technology malfunctioned during some of these interactions, the case remains an active legal matter. It is a strange and chilling development that someone would attempt to orchestrate another violent crime while already in custody for such a high-profile murder.
It is chilling how some people go as far as to report a deadly home invasion after stabbing a spouse dozens of times, or in this case, plot further violence from behind bars to cover their tracks.
