When Sony announced the specs for the PlayStation 4, both fans and developers rejoiced in their decision to make a significant leap in both their CPU and GPU technology. However, the PlayStation 4 could be outmatched out of the gate by gaming PCs, according to one Nvidia executive.
Tony Tamasi, Nvidia’s senior VP of content and developent, recently took a few shots at the PS4.
“The PS4 specs are in the neighborhood of a low-end CPU,” says Tamasi
“Compared to gaming PCs, the PS4 specs are in the neighborhood of a low-end CPU, and a low-to mid-range GPU side… If the PS4 ships in December as Sony indicated, it will only offer about half the performance of a GTX680 GPU, which launched in March 2012.”
Tamasi sees the exact same problems that consoles have always been facing when stacked against PCs, and that’s the ability to upgrade. “What you get today in terms of performance is what you’re stuck with five – ten years down the road,” said the excecutive. And he’s not optimistic about the future for consoles either, he believes that the hardware cycle will outdate these new consoles quicker than any before them.
“If history predicts the future, then these next-generation consoles, while being more powerful than the current ones, will very quickly end up more than an order of magnitude behind the PC.”
